Mallaig SpeedQuizzing host raises vital funds for local causes
A Mallaig quiz host has raised over £600 so far for a trio of good causes through a series of increasingly popular SpeedQuizzing Live events.
Dawn MacPhie, a teacher at Mallaig Primary School, came up with the idea of hosting her own SpeedQuizzing Live events after taking part in numerous virtual quizzes during lockdown, while she and her family were shielding.
Using SpeedQuizzing Live, our free app and online platform that enables users to host and play fast-paced, interactive, virtual quizzes, Dawn hosted her first fundraising quiz on the final weekend in June. It proved hugely popular, raising £350 for Alzheimer’s Research UK, a leading dementia research charity.
Following on from this success, Dawn has staged a further two fundraising quizzes in July in aid of Mallaig Pool & Leisure Centre and Mallaig FC, raising over £250 in donations.
The money will be used by Mallaig FC to fund transport costs to future games, while Mallaig Pool & Leisure Centre, which has been closed since the 20th March, will use the funds to help it recover and reopen safely when government guidelines allow.
Commenting on the money raised so far, Dawn said: “For me, hosting quizzes has given me the perfect release during these challenging times.
“It’s been a way of bringing people together, having fun and raising money for some very deserving causes in the process, and I’m indebted to my quizzers who have shown huge generosity in these extraordinary times.
“Knowing that the money raised from through my quizzes will really help local organisations is a fantastic feeling and I’m looking forward to hosting more over the coming weeks.”
Tiina Heinonen, from Mallaig Pool & Leisure Centre, said: “We’ve been closed since March 20th and that has hit us very hard from a financial perspective; it truly warms the ‘cockles of our hearts’ knowing individuals such as Dawn, her quizzers and the wider community so willingly and generously give their support.
“Mallaig Pool & Leisure is a Social Enterprise and a charitable organisation; Dawn’s donation, coupled with the funds that have been raised by so many others in support of our centre over the last few months, means we’re well on our way to raising £5,000. Once we hit this target, The Moidart Trust has very generously offered to donate a further £10,000, which will serve as a real lifeline for the centre and enable us to reopen safely when government guidelines allow.”
Dawn is hosting her next charity quiz on Sunday 2nd August, with all the money raised going to local charities that focus on mental health and raising suicide awareness. For more information, visit Dawn’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/dawn.macphie.
